BLS FOOTBALL SEASON REVIEW

The BLS football team started the season with high expectations after a storming end to the previous season only just getting pipped at the post for promotion. There was some trepidation with the first fixture being against the unknown quantity of a team called Hellinix, this situation was made worse with the disappearance of the inspirational if somewhat overweight captain on one of his many trips to Switzerland. Tim Morris the Welsh wizard was moved into the strikers role to replace Damaian last seasons highest goal scorer. Any fears of how the game would turn out were soon allayed after Tim knocked in three in the first ten minutes. This was further built on by goals from Steve, Paul Tebbit and Lanky Matt. The match ended 9-0 and it was hoped this early commanding performance would set the trend for the rest of the season.

The next match against a team of school teachers to be, in the form of Blackboard jungle turned out to be scrappy and bad tempered affair ( I hope they learn some manners before they get let lose on the children they teach). Tim Morris continued his phenomenal start to the season scoring twice in the first half which was capitalised on by the returning captain Damian and Jamie Trinadad putting the ball in the back of the net twice in the second half. After a few heated encounters with the opposition involving Lanky and Farmer and a well timed body check by Paul Tebbit the game ended 4-2 to BLS.

BLS main title contenders were the next opposition. Brown Wings Invitation took the initiative scoring a freak long distance curler early on. BLS battled back with goals from Damian and Le Tiss. The defence played a strong part with Chaz taking players out left right and centre, and Clive and Dan playing there usual commanding roles.

Next up were the UAE a match BLS had to play with only half the usual team. The decimation of the team and the fierce crosswinds mad the game a scrappy affair. But Adrian West and the players he managed to draft in kept the team strong and with goals from Lanky, Le Tiss and Tim the game was won 5-1. At this point BLS held a commanding lead in the division and could see promotion in sight.

The fifth game was against a team who seemed more intent on shooting at there own goal than that of BLS’s. They put up a decent fight until the first two goals had gone in but after that there lack of resolve showed through as they collapsed losing interest in the game. This allowed the teams 5ft2 Ginger centre back race through the tattered defence to score the first goal he has ever scored.

BLS were dissapointed when there next opponents New talent obviously hearing of BLS’s fearsome reputation failed to show up resulting in a 5-0 win by default.

The final match were against Goal Mouth scramble a team BLS had drawn with 2-2 last season. Although by this time the title was well won BLS were looking for the 100% record. What resulted can only be described as a classic battle between two evenly balanced teams. Goalmouth scored first with there veteran strikers height proved too great for the BLS defence. Tim Morris was performing well on the wing whipping in pacey crosses which seriously troubled the opposition defence. Eventually the BLS pressure paid off with Paul Tebbit scoring a powerful Ferdinand esque header from a corner. Le Tiss with his characteristic weaving winding run jinked through the disbelieving Goalmouth defence sending the ball into the bottom corner. The opposition equalised again through there aerial prowess and Damians series of on the line misses had the team doubting themselves. BLS then conceeded again going 3-2 down. The strength shown by Westy and Dan in midfield paid off putting through telling balls which even Damian couldn’t miss taking the score to 4-3 to BLS. In a rather extended last two minutes the BLS defence was broken down for a fourth time, making the final score 4-4 probably the fairest result after both teams played a very impressive game.

The title was won and BLS can now look forward to next seasons cup campaign with some expectation and next year a place in the Second Division.
